Amalaki or Amala is one of the most commonly used herb in Ayurvedic medicine. It is described in almost all the Nighantus (Ancient Ayurvedic Monographs) as well as Samhitas.

Its fruits along with some other herbs were used for bathing during marriage rituals.

Important Mentions

Acharya Charaka quoted it as the best among the Vayasthapana drugs (Rejuvenators). [Ch.Su.25]

Though all the Amla rasa (sour substances) are said to enhance Pitta. Amalaki is the exception being Pitta Shamaka.

Different Varieties

As such no varieties are mentioned in ancient texts of Ayurveda but there are varieties which are developed in modern times.

Four varieties of E. officinalis developed by Narendradev University of Agri. and Tech., Ghaziabad U.P. are :

  1. Krishna (NA5)
  2. Amrit (NA6)
  3. Neelam
  4. Kanchan

Botanical Description

It s a large deciduous tree with greenish-grey or red bark. Leaves are pinnate, distichously close set, linear-oblong, obtuse. Flowers- densely fascicled, yellowish. Fruits- berry, globose, succulent, yellow or pink when ripe, obscurely 6-lobed. Seeds- trigonous

Therapeutic Uses

  1. Somaroga – Ripen banana, juice of Amalak, honey and sugar are taken together (G.N.)
  2. Prameha – Amalaki and Haridra juice with honey (A.H.Ut. 40)
  3. Hikka – Juice of Amalaki and Kapittha with Pippali powder and honey (Ch.Chi.17)

Sanskrit Verses Mentioning Amalaki

१. आमलकी वयःस्थापनानाम् । (च.सू.२५)

२. अम्लं समधुरं ति्तं कषायं कटुकं सरम् चक्षुष्यं सर्वदोषध्नं वृष्यमामलकीफलम् ॥ हन्ति वार्त तदम्लत्वात्पित्तं माधुर्यशैत्यतः। कफ हृक्षकधायत्वात्फलेभ्योऽभ्यधिकं च तत्।। (सु.सू ४६)

३. वयःस्थाऽऽमलकं वृष्यं जातीफलरसं शिवम् धात्रीफलं श्रीफलं च तथाऽमृतफलं स्मृतम् ।। कषार्यं कटुतिक्ताम्लं स्वादु चामलकं हिमम् सरं त्रिदोषहद् वृष्ण्ं ज्वरम्नं च रसायनम् ॥ हन्ति वातं तदम्लत्वात्पितं माधुर्यशैत्यतः । वर्फ हृक्षकथायत्वात्फलं धात्र्यास्त्रिदोषजित् ॥ (घ.नि.)

४. धात्रीफले श्रीफलं च तथामृतफलं शिवम् ।। वयःस्थामलकं वृष्यं जातीफलरसं तथा | अमृतामंडकं शीतफलं वर्षफलं स्मृतम् ।। (शो.नि.)

५. तद्वत् (हरीतकीवत्) आमलकं शीरतं माधुर्यात्पितनुत्परम् कर्फ कटुविपाकित्वादम्लत्वान्मारुतं जयेत् ।। वृष्यं च कण्डयं चक्षुष्यं हद्यं दाहज्वरापहम् । तन्मज्जा प्रदरच्छर्द्धिातपित्ततृषापहः ॥ कषायो मधुरश्षासी वृष्यः कासनिबर्हणः अतीसारादिके शूलेऽभिन्यासे सूतिकामये ।।शुद्धवाते च तद्वज्य रविवारे विशेषतः || (शो.नि.)

६. तद्वत् धात्री स्वेदमेदोहराम्ला शुक्रला हिमा । भग्नसंधानकृत् केश्या पिपासाकफपितहत् ॥ तन्मज्जा तुवरः स्वादुस्तृट्छद्य्यनिलपित्तहा । हन्ति वार्तं तदम्लत्वात् पितं माघुर्यशैत्यतः ॥ कर्फ हृक्षकषायत्वात् फलेभ्योऽभ्यधिकं मतम् । चक्षुष्यं सर्वदोषध्नं वृष्यमामलकीफलम् ॥(कै. नि.)

७. वयस्यामलकी वृष्या जातीफलरसं शिवम् । धात्रीफलं श्रीफलं च तथाऽमृतफलं स्मृतम् ॥त्रिष्वामलकमाख्यातं धात्री तिष्यफलाऽमृता ।। हरीतकीसमं धात्रीफलं किन्तु विशेषत: । रक्तपित्तप्रमेह्नं परं वृष्य रसायनम् ॥ हन्ति वात्त तदम्लत्वात्पितं माधुर्यशैत्यतः ।। कर्फ हृक्षकषायत्वत्फलं धात्र्यास्त्रिदोषजित् ॥ यस्य यस्य फलस्येह वीर्य भवति यादृशम् । तस्य तस्यैव वीर्येण मज्जानपि निर्दिशेत् ।। (भा.प्र.)

८. कटुमधुरकषायं किञ्चित् कफप्नम् रुचिकरमतिशीतं हन्ति पित्तास्त्रतापम् ।। (रा.नि.)
